Horse Slaughter?
Most Americans don't  know that an unfortunate part of the horse population is inhumanely shipped across U.S. borders and slaughtered for human consumption. The meat is then shipped abroad to be served as a delicacy in foreign restaurants.

Freedom Hill Horse Rescue does not support this practice and works hard to stop U.S. horses from being shipped for slaughter. We purchase horses from Killer buyers that sell horses for slaughter. We go to Capital Hill and work side by side with other dedicated citizens and humane groups to support legislation to end the shipping of U.S. horses across our borders for the purpose of slaughter.

Educate Yourself!

Each of the links above has many more links on their pages so you can educate yourself about this very important topic!

133,000 horses went to slaughter last year. This is the highest total since 1995. Moving horse slaughter out of our Country did not protect American horses. They are still shipped to Canada and Mexico for processing.

As a rescue organization we realize that a ban on transporting horses for slaughter across American borders will increase the number of horses in the United States. We want to help re-educate current and potential horse owners and organizations about options that will reduce the horse population over time.

These options include:
  • Education on end of life options (euthanasia and body disposal)
  • Reduce back yard breeding (your mare that is crazy or lame should not be bred just because she is pretty or you don't know what else to do with her. Lameness and disposition problems are often genetic and carried to the foals)
  • Promote adoption of rescue foals as a viable alternative to buying from a back yard breeder (there of thousands of foals in the US that need homes. Many are by-products of the Nurse Mare Foal Industry)
  • Encourage Breed Registries to only allow approved horses to be bred (restrictions on breeding keeps breed values up and keeps the best quality horses in the gene pool. The Quarter Horse Registry has the highest number of horses bred each year and this breed has the greatest number of registered horses that are run through slaughter plants. Quality versus Quantity is not promoted)
  • Senior care education (Senior horses require special diets and health care to have a good quality of life)
  • Educate the public about the Auction Arena and what REALLY happens to horses when they are there and where they REALLY can go. (horses often go through a shock period when run through auction. They are often bid on by under cover kill buyers. If not sold your horse will quietly be sold to the local kill buyer and through an underground shipper and will be transported to the local area kill pen)

These are just a few options that we discussed on August 6th 2009 at the Maryland Horse Forum

SLAUGHER IS NOT AN OPTION!

Keep your horse out of the auction arena to keep him safe and alive.
